Mastery & Traditional Styles
“Every Mithila painting, Paag and dupatta from Discover Mithila is handmade, not printed.”
Her Story & Journey
Soni Jha is a traditional Mithila folk artist based in Madhubani, Bihar, practicing generational art traditions rooted in Mithilanchal culture.
Specializing in both Kachni and Bharni traditions, her work harmonizes intricate monochrome linework with vivid color applications. In her Kachni practice, she applies delicate geometric textures, fine cross-hatching, and double-contoured borders drawn freehand with fine bamboo nibs. In her Bharni compositions, sacred iconography such as Ardhanarishvara, the cosmic Matsya (sacred fish), and auspicious floral mandalas are rendered with rich, vibrant pigments.
Beyond canvas and handmade paper, Soni Jha extends her folk craft into lifestyle traditions, including hand-painted ceremonial Lahathi (lac bangles) and custom artisanal cotton totes, preserving living heritage for daily life.
