The Janeu (also called Yagnopavita or Upanayana thread) is a sacred cotton thread worn by Hindu men after the Upanayana ceremony — one of the sixteen Samskaras (rites of passage) in Vedic tradition. In Mithila, it holds exceptional cultural significance.
Three Strands of Meaning
The thread consists of three strands twisted together — each representing a different debt the wearer acknowledges: to their ancestors (Pitri Rin), to the sages and teachers (Rishi Rin), and to the gods (Deva Rin). Wearing it is a reminder of these responsibilities.
The Upanayana Ceremony
In Mithila, the Upanayana ceremony is a celebrated family ritual marking the passage from childhood to spiritual adulthood. Boys between 8 and 16 receive the Janeu from a priest in a ceremony attended by the entire family.
